Lesotho became independent from Britain on 4 October 1966 as a constitutional monarchy. The ruling Basotho National Party (BNP) appeared likely to lose Lesotho's first post-independence general elections in 1970, resulting in Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan annulling the election, refusing to hand over power to the Basotho Congress Party (BCP) and imprisoning its leadership.

The BNP ruled by decree until a military coup in January 1986. The Military Council granted executive powers to King Moshoeshoe II, who until then had been a ceremonial monarch. In 1990 the King was forced into exile after a falling out with the army. His son was installed as King Letsie III. The chairman of the military leadership was ousted in 1991 and replaced by Major General Phisoane Ramaema, who handed over power to a democratically elected government of the BCP in 1993.

In August 1994, Letsie III staged a coup which was backed by the military and deposed the BCP government. The new government did not receive full international recognition. After protracted negotiations, the BCP government was reinstated and King Letsie III abdicated in favor of his father in 1995, who died in 1996 and was again succeeded by his son, Letsie III.

The ruling BCP split over leadership disputes in 1997. Prime Minister Ntsu Mokhehle formed a new party, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), and was followed by a majority of Members of Parliament, which enabled him to form a new government. The LCD won the general elections in 1998 under the leadership of Pakalitha Mosisili, who had succeeded Mokhehle as party leader. Despite the elections being pronounced free and fair by observers, opposition political parties rejected the results and violence ensued. The government requested a SADC task force to intervene to prevent a coup and restore stability. A military group of South African and Botswana troops entered the country in September, put down the mutiny, and withdrew in May 1999.

Consitutional reforms lead to peaceful parliamentary elections in 2002, but the National Assembly elections of February 2007 were hotly contested and aggrieved parties continue to dispute how the electoral law was applied to award proportional seats in the Assembly.

The kingdom is ruled by King Letsie III and governed by Prime Minister Thomas Thabane.

Lesotho has a mixed legal system of English common law and Roman-Dutch law.

Le Lesotho a acquis son indépendance du Royaume Uni le 4 Octobre 1966. Effrayé de perdre les élections générales de 1970 comme l’entrevoyait les sondages, le Premier ministre Leabua Jonathan du Parti (National Basotho Basotho National Party- BNP) annulât l'élection, refusant de céder le pouvoir au Parti Congressiste Basotho (Basotho Congress Party-BCP).

La BNP dirigea par décret jusqu'au coup d'Etat militaire de Janvier 1986. Le Conseil militaire rendit ses pouvoirs au Roi Moshoeshoe II, qui jusque-là n'occupait qu'un poste honorifique. En 1990, le Roi fut contraint à l'exil après une brouille avec l'armée, qui installa son fils Letsie III au trône et ravi le pouvoir au BCP.

Le nouveau gouvernement n'ayant pas reçu pleine reconnaissance internationale, et consécutivement à de longues négociations ; le gouvernement BCP fut rétabli et Moshoeshoe II reprit le pouvoir en 1995. Ce dernier régna jusqu'à sa mort (1996) et fut de nouveau succédé par son fils Letsie III.

En contestation des élections de 1998, des violentes protestations ainsi qu’une mutinerie militaire, entraînèrent une intervention brève mais sanglante de l'Afrique du Sud. Cette dernière se retira du Lesotho en Mai 1999.

Une autre réforme constitutionnelle permit de rétablir une certaine stabilité dans le pays et conduit à des élections législatives pacifiques en 2002. Les élections de Février 2007 des membres de l'Assemblée nationale ont été vivement contestées par les parties lésées. Ceux-ci continuent de contester l’application de la loi électorale en matière d’attribution des sièges à l'Assemblée.

Le royaume est dirigé par le roi Letsie III et dirigé par le Premier ministre Thomas Thabane.

O Partido Nacional Basotho ao poder (Basotho National Party, BNP) parecia susceptível de perder as primeiras eleições gerais pós-independência do Lesoto, em 1970, as quais foram anuladas pelo Primeiro-ministro Leabua Jonathan, que recusou de entregar o poder ao Partido do Congresso Basotho (Basotho Congress Party, BCP) e emprisionou a sua liderança.

O BNP governou por decreto até ao golpe militar de Janeiro de 1986. O Conselho Militar concedeu poderes executivos ao rei Moshoeshoe II, que até então tinha sido um monarca cerimonial. Em 1990, o rei foi forçado ao exílio depois de um desentendimento com o exército. Seu filho foi instalado como o rei Letsie III. O presidente da liderança militar foi deposto em 1991 e substituído pelo Major General Phisoane Ramaema, que entregou o poder a um governo democraticamente eleito do BCP, em 1993.

Em agosto de 1994, Letsie III encenou um golpe apoiado pelos militares, que depôs o governo do BCP. O novo governo não recebeu completo reconhecimento internacional. Após longas negociações, o governo do BCP foi reintegrado e o Rei Letsie III abdicou em favor do seu pai, em 1995, que morreu em 1996 e foi novamente sucedido por seu filho, Letsie III.

O Lesotho tem um sistema jurídico misto de direito comum e direito romano-Holandês.
